Those of you familiar with this blog know that I have recommended ALS Worldwide (www.alsworldwide.org) and my friend Stephen Byer, as a resource for ALS patients and their families. One of the many services Stephen and his organization have provided is the exposure of fraudulent stem cell clinics and providers that prey on families who are already devastated by the ALS diagnosis. The most public of these resulted in a sting that became an Emmy winning "60 Minutes" episode entitled “21st Century Snake Oil Salesmen.”

In his recent newsletter, I see that finally, a 24 count indictment was unsealed at the end of the year against these horrendous people. One has been arrested and the other is being sought by the police. The "60 Minutes" episode was broadcast on April 18, 2010. Justice may be slow, but it will be certain for these two. Unfortunately there are many, many more like them throughout the world: people who prey on those who are most vulnerable. Again, I highly recommend that anyone considering any “alternative” treatment for ALS or any other neurological disease, consult Steve’s site. And for those who care about such things, ALS Worldwide.org needs and deserves your support, and I urge you to go to the site and help.
