“Primum non nocerum” (first do no harm)

Our ALS team recently presented a panel on neural cell therapy transplantation at a Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine conference in Detroit.  We are hoping to post access to the tape of the presentation in the not too distant future on our web site.  I believe it offers a fascinating look into the science and practical medical issues involved in treating diseases of the brain and spinal cord with cell therapy, and when it is available I recommend that anyone with an interest view it.   One of the surprises to most in the audience though, was the presentation of Dr. Jonathan Glass, our site Principle Investigator at Emory.

"If GE’s strategy of investment in China is wrong...

...it represents a loss of a billion dollars, perhaps a couple of billion dollars. If it is right, it is the future of this company for the next century.”

 - Jack Welsh

China,…the very word conjures up images of vast numbers of people; ancient wisdom, Terra Cotta warriors; and now, relentless global expansion and growth.  A country which until recently did not even believe in personal property, now demands that companies rethink how they view their world wide intellectual property as they eye China’s enormous internal markets.   “A riddle wrapped in an enigma, shrouded in mystery” indeed.

18 Years Ago Today

“The Road goes ever on and on…”

JRR Tolkien

Eighteen years ago, this night, January 20th, I sat in a chair in Children’s Hospital in Washington DC and watched my son, then 4, in the bed, wires protruding from every directions in and out of him, his breathing barely perceptible. He was having a very difficult recovery from an 18 hour brain surgery several weeks before to remove a grapefruit size brain tumor. He did recover, and we know how blessed we have been because of that. The date sticks in my mind because it is my wife’s birthday.

“He that will not apply new remedies, must expect new evils..” - Sir Francis Bacon (1597)

With the filing of our IND recently, Neuralstem has hopefully introduced a truly “new remedy” into the fight against ALS and other incurable neurodegenerative diseases.   We have received many questions about the IND.  People want to know  what it entails, and what  the process will be going forward.  I will try to answer as many of these questions as I can in this post.

Whither Now?

Many have you have been asking what effect the election might have on stem cell research, and of course by inference on Neuralstem.  As Yogi Berra famously said, predictions are hard to make, especially when they concern the future.  Nevertheless, now that we can see the outcome of the election, here is my take:

World Stem Cell Summit

The World Stem Cell Summit was held this week in Madison Wisconsin.  I had the pleasure of attending as a speaker on a panel whose focus was the therapeutic use of stem cell technology for ALS.
